Maternity photoshoot in Greenwich Park
One of the most common questions I get is: "What should I wear for my summer maternity session?"
The good news? It doesn’t need to be complicated. Whether we’re shooting at home or outdoors, the goal is always the same: to make sure you feel relaxed, comfortable, and like yourself. Here’s what I recommend when choosing what to wear for a natural, relaxed maternity photo session in the summer.
Keep it simple and soft
Natural fabrics and soft tones photograph beautifully. Think linens, cottons and layers that move gently with you. Neutral colours like cream, beige, soft grey, blush, and olive are timeless and flattering in any setting.
Avoid busy patterns, loud prints, and logos (small prints are generally fine)- these can distract from the connection we’re capturing. If you love a bit of colour, go for muted or earthy tones that complement your space or the natural environment outdoors.
Choose something you feel good in
The most important rule? Wear something you feel confident and comfortable in. For some, that’s a flowing maxi dress that highlights the bump beautifully. For others, it might be soft loungewear or jeans and a vest with a cosy cardigan thrown over the top. In-home sessions are especially lovely with bare feet, oversized shirts, or a favourite jumper that feels like home. You don’t need a new wardrobe. It just needs to feel like you.
For outdoor sessions: flow, comfort and layers
If we’re heading outside, think about movement and the weather. Dresses that flow in the breeze create beautiful, dynamic images. Layers can keep you warm without hiding your bump. Footwear matters too - we may be walking through grass, woodland or along a path, so opt for shoes you can move easily in. This couple chose Greenwich Park as their backdrop and we were walking down hill and back up the hill again!
Coordinate, don’t match
If your partner or children will be joining the session, choose colours and textures that complement each other, rather than match exactly. A soft, neutral palette across the family creates a cohesive look without being too "matchy-matchy." Let everyone wear something they feel comfortable in - we want them to feel relaxed, not dressed up for a formal event.
Not sure? I’m here to help
If you're feeling stuck, you're not alone. Most of my clients send me a few outfit options in advance and I’m always happy to give feedback. You can even have a couple of options ready on the day, and we can decide together based on the light, your mood, or the setting. There’s no pressure to get it "perfect."
The goal of your maternity session is to capture you as you are - relaxed, radiant, and real.
And when you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence shines through in every photo.
